Eye Movements and Schizophrenia

چکیده
Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) has been reported to be abnormal in schizophrenic patients. 30 schizophrenic patients and 15 normal subjects were examined for the quality of their smooth pursuit performance. 73.33% of the schizophrenics and 40% of the normal subjects had 'impaired' pursuit performance. The significance of the findings has been discussed.

Vergence eye movements in patients with schizophrenia
Previous studies have shown that smooth pursuit eye movements are impaired in patients with schizophrenia. However, under normal viewing conditions, targets move not only in the frontoparallel plane but also in depth, and tracking them requires both smooth pursuit and vergence eye movements. Although previous studies in humans and non-human primates suggest that these two eye movement subsystem...
متن کاملNeurobiology of smooth pursuit eye movement deficits in schizophrenia: an fMRI study.
OBJECTIVE Smooth pursuit eye movements are abnormal in patients with schizophrenia. The investigators used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare brain hemodynamic response during a smooth pursuit eye movement task in patients with schizophrenia and healthy comparison subjects. METHOD Fourteen patients with schizophrenia and 14 healthy comparison subjects performed a smooth p...
متن کاملWhat can eye movements tell us about Symbol Digit substitution by patients with schizophrenia?
Substitution tests are sensitive to cognitive impairment and reliably discriminate patients with schizophrenia from healthy individuals better than most other neuropsychological instruments. However, due to their multifaceted nature, substitution test scores cannot pinpoint the specific cognitive deficits that lead to poor performance. The current study investigated eye movements during perform...
متن کاملPreserved implicit mentalizing in schizophrenia despite poor explicit performance: evidence from eye tracking
Schizophrenia has been characterized by an impaired mentalizing. It has been suggested that distinguishing implicit from explicit processes is crucial in social cognition, and only the latter might be affected in schizophrenia. Two other questions remain open: (1) Is schizophrenia characterized by an hypo- or hyper attribution of intentions? (2) Is it characterized by a deficit in the attributi...
متن کاملVisual processing and social cognition in schizophrenia: relationships among eye movements, biological motion perception, and empathy.
Schizophrenia patients have impairments at several levels of cognition including visual attention (eye movements), perception, and social cognition. However, it remains unclear how lower-level cognitive deficits influence higher-level cognition. To elucidate the hierarchical path linking deficient cognitions, we focused on biological motion perception, which is involved in both the early stage ...
